St. Fagans and Caerphilly

Headed south towards Cardiff again today, planning to visit the much recommended St. Fagans National History Museum a bit to the west of Cardiff proper. This is basically an open air museum where the displays are buildings of Welsh cultural significance. Originally on the grounds of what is now the Museum was a farmhouse and an Elizabethan manor house, both of which now form part of the display. Since 1948, however, the Museum has been rescuing buildings from all over Wales by taking them apart and putting them back together on the Museum grounds. The buildings are all furnished and decorated according to their period too, and this makes for a fascinating display. We spent over three hours there, including a lot of time in this one...
Other buildings were less grand, but no less interesting...
After finishing up with lunch at the Museum we headed off towards Caerphilly and its castle. We did a quick tour though the castle, the largest in Wales and with a fascinating history. Sadly much of this castle too was destroyed in the English Civil War, but it is still well worth a look...
we are now back at Pentrebach for our last night at the cottage. We went down to the village pub too to say our goodbyes, and will miss this place when we move on tomorrow morning.

  2. Still a lot of them around, even though they're getting rid of them.
