Our Itinerary

Flying High: 1-2 September - Flying to Heathrow, arriving early in the morning. Then we drive to Devon via Highclere Castle (for fans of Downton Abbey) and Stonehenge.

The Southwest: 2-7 September - Staying in a holiday villa on a farm in Souton Down, near Okehampton. We'll be driving around Devon and Cornwall, including Dartmoor, Exmoor, Exeter and the Jurassic Coast, Penzance and Land's End, Torquay and Plymouth.

South Wales: 8-12 September - Staying in a small holiday house in Pentre-bach, a tiny village (about ten houses and a pub) near Brecon and the Brecon Beacons. More driving around to exotic places such as Herefordshire, the Gower Peninsula, Cardiff (the home of Dr Who) and Pembrokeshire.

The Cotswolds: 13-14 September - Staying in a B&B in the village of Weston Sub-Edge in the heart of the Cotswolds (Gloucestershire). Perhaps some cycling down country lanes might be in order. Lots of pubs to visit.

Peak District: 15 September - Staying at a B&B in Pilsley Village on the Chatsworth Estate in the Peak District (Derbyshire). Visits to castles and stately homes figure prominently.

York: 16-17 September - Staying at yet another B&B in York. More castles and stately homes on the way there, followed the next day by a gruelling walking tour of York. We'll try to cram in as many sights as possible and get into our first serious shopping opportunity.

Lake District: 18 September - Staying at (you guessed it) a B&B in Windermere in the Lake District of Cumbria. A quiet day cruising around the lake, weather permitting.

Hadrian's Wall: 19-20 September - Staying at a B&B in Haltwhistle, Northumberland. This is all about Romans - Roman sites, Roman museums - but there should also be some fine scenery to gawk at.

Northumberland: 21 September - Staying in a hotel in Dunbar, over the border in East Lothian, Scotland. On the way there we'll swing past Holy Island, Bamburgh and Berwick-on-Tweed.

Edinburgh: 22-25 September - Staying in a small apartment just off Grassmarket. Lots of sightseeing to do in Edinburgh and a friend to catch up with, but also a day trip to the Highlands is not impossible. Lots of pubs, bars and restaurants right near our apartment. We dump the car on arrival in Edinburgh and head off to London by train.

London: 26 September-4 October - Staying at a guest house in Lambeth. It used to be the home of William Bligh, the Captain of Bounty fame and fourth Governor of New South Wales. We'll be checking out as many London sights as we can, seeing The Commitments stage show in the West End and shopping until it hurts. A day trip to Paris has been booked, and depending on how we feel we may also go to Portsmouth for a day. Or not.

Flying Low: 5-6 October - We fly back home, exhausted.
